Combining functional low molecular weight molecules and macromolecules offers new possibilities to create materials that take the best from both worlds: Suitable mechanical properties become combined with advanced functionalities such as ion- or molecule recognition and transport, biological activity or energy storage. To generate advanced functional materials the research of the department is directed towards taylor made functional polymers as well as the preparation of new low molecular weight building units with self-organisation abilities, biological- or material science related functions.
